Package Management[edit]
Ubuntu uses the Advanced Packaging Tool (APT). APT is developed for Debian. There different frontends which use APT like adept or KPackage. The repositories (Paketquellen) are listet in /etc/apt/sources.list. This can be a CD, DVD, directory on the hard disk or an HTTP or FTP server.
To add applications with kubuntu 'K-Menu->Add/Remove Programs' or 'K-Menu->Progamme hinzufügen/entfernen' or perhaps better 'K-Menu->System->Adept Manager'.
Upgrade Packages[edit]
sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade
Adept Updater hangs[edit]
sudo dpkg --configure -a
PPA[edit]
Personal Package Archive (PPA) is a repository, provided by Canonical (the company behind Ubuntu), that allows developers and enthusiasts to offer up-to-date versions of software to all Ubuntu users. Originally PPAs were limited to programmers and testers, but Canonical opened PPAs to everyone in late 2007. A PPA, or Personal Package Archive, is a collection of software not included in Ubuntu by default. Whatever the case, PPAs provide updates for your favorite software at a much quicker rate than Ubuntu itself. Once you install new software, updates will come to you through the Ubuntu Update Manager.
